Railways

The Indian Railways is the world’s 3rd largest rail network and boasts of a system spread over 115,000 km, with 12,617 passenger and 7,421 freight trains, plying 23 million travellers and 3 million tonnes of freight on a daily basis.

  • It's revenues increased at a CAGR of 6.20% during FY07-FY18 to $27.71 billion in FY18. Particularly, freight revenue rose at a CAGR of 6.36% to reach $18.16 billion in 2017-18.
  • Freight traffic through the Dedicated Freight Corridors will increase at a CAGR of 5.4% to 182 MT in 2021–22 from 140 MT in 2016–17.
  • Interim Budget for FY2019-20 allocated $9.25 billion to the Indian Railways.
  • Provision for FDI in railways to improve infrastructure for freight and high-speed trains. FDI inflows into railways-related components stood at $941 million between April 2000 to December 2018.
  • Government is working on a ‘National Rail Plan’ to integrate its rail network with other modes of transport, and develop a multi-modal transportation network.
