Roads

Spanning over a length of 5.5 million km, India boasts of one of the largest road networks in the world.

  • A total of 200,000 km national highways planned for completion by 2022. Total length reached 122,434 km in FY18.
  • Total length of roads constructed under Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) was 47,447 km in 2017-18, with 9,829 km developed during FY18.
  • A target to construct 10,000 km of national highways in FY19 has been set.
  • Under ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’, total length of projects awarded was 6,400 km up till October 2018. A further 34,800 km road projects have been proposed to be constructed.
  • As of August 2018, projects worth $29.83 million approved by GoI to improve connectivity among Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Diu.
  • Interim Budget for FY2019-20 allocated $11.5 billion for road transport and highways.
